Abstract

Wood Plastic Composite is a product made from a mixture of sawdust with thermoplastic polymer. The WPC board used is the composite of sengon sawdust with HDPE recycled plastic. This research was done using UV rays because WPC board has thermoplastic component that the characteristic is easily changed when it is exposed to the UV rays and will be normal again after cold. The purpose of this research is to find the influence of the intensity of UV rays toward the flexural strength of MOE and MOR of the WPC board. The flexural strength testing of WPC board refers to ASTM D4761-02 standard with 12 specimen of 350 x 50 x 12 mm which are divided into four different times of UV rays exposion, which are 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 6 weeeks, and 8 weeks. The specimen were inserted to the 1 m x1 m box of the UV rays that is completed by 10 lamps of 20 watt UV Extend. The flexural strength testing of WPC board resulted in the average value of normal MOE of 3398,39 MPa, and the average value of the smallest MOE test is 2050,98 MPa. The flexural strength testing of WPC board resulted in the average value of normal MOR of 40,49 MPa, and the average value of the smallest MOR test is 37,44 MPa. Increasing of the time intensity on WPC board to the UV rays has no effect on MOE value and has an effect on MOR value of the WPC board.
