Abstract

The use of natural fiber polymer composite material in the field of automotive industry is experiencing rapid development and try to shift the existence of synthetic polymer composite material that is used as reinforcement for composite materials such as E-Glass, Carbon, and Silicone Carbide. The research was aimed to determine the variation in the volume fraction of banana stem fiber as a composite material against impact toughness. The method used in making specimen is the hand lay up method. The Matrik used is polyester resin that serves as a binder fiber banana rod kepok. The preparation of the banana stem fiber saba with an alkali immersion (5% NaOH) for 2 hours. The volume fraction of Saba is used 35%, 45%, 55% and 65%. Composite testing with testing standard impact tests refers to ASTM 265. The results showed the lowest impact toughness at 35% of the fibre volume fraction with an average impact toughness rate of 0.027 J/mm2 and the highest impact toughness at 55% of fibre volume fraction with an average impact toughness value of 0.061 J/mm2
