Abstract

The piston is an important component in a motor. The piston is made of aluminum ore and can also be from used piston recycling. Because of the limitations of aluminum ore and high prices, one alternative to making pistons is to use used piston raw materials for recycling. The addition of silicon carbide is given in the hope of increasing the hardness of the piston. The purpose of this study is to compare the results of the former piston casting with the addition of silicon carbide with the original piston. Used piston casting with metal molds and the addition of silicon carbide are given with various variations, namely 15%, 20%, 25% and 30%. The alloy is then subjected to a hardness test, a composition test and a microstructure test. Vickers hardness test results on specimens of adding 15% SiC yielded 134.46 VHN, SiC 20% produced 159.19 VHN, SiC 25% produced 177.15 VHN, and SiC 30% yielded 198.8 VHN. While the original piston value as a comparison is 175 VHN. So that the addition is close to the hardness value on the original piston is SiC alloy 25%.
